The underground Danger of Microwave Ovens

There was a 26 year old man who heated up a cup of water in a microwave oven. When the timer shut off the oven, he removed the cup immediately from inside the oven. Just as he observed that the water was not boiling, the next occasion before he knew it, the water "blew up" into his face. The cup remained intact until he tossed it to the ground, but all the hot water had by then scalded his face. He suffered blisters as well as first and second degree burns on his face which may leave scars. He also may have lost partial sight in his left eye.

Lesson Learnt

Microwave Oven

Microwaved water and other liquids do not all the time bubble when they reach boiling point. They can really get superheated and not bubble at all. The superheated liquid will only bubble up and out of the cup when it is moved, or when an object like a spoon or tea bag is put into it.

Things you should and should not do

Do clean the door seals and door seal areas with a damp cloth after using the microwave oven. all the time check that the utensils used are favorable for microwave use before operating the appliance. Ensure cooking timer are correctly set as overcooking may effect in the food catching fire and subsequent damage to the oven.

Do Not take off water or beverages suddenly after heating. If not, the delayed eruptive boiling may caused the water or beverage to blow up resulting in serious burns. Do not store flammable materials next to the microwave oven or near to the oven. It could be a fire hazard. Do not leave or store anyone inside the oven when not in use. Do not cook eggs in their shell or re-heat whole hard boiled eggs with or without shells.
